The educational needs of Pickens’ youth are served by the School District of Pickens County, which is comprised of 15 elementary schools, five middle schools, and five high schools. However, seven schools are located within the city of Pickens. A few private and parochial schools are also located in Pickens County. This public district is fully accredited by the South Carolina Department of Education and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; the district is also the highest ranking district in South Carolina per Sunshine Review. Students and adult learners looking to further their higher learning ambitions may do so at a number of colleges and universities located near Pickens in the Greenville metropolitan area. These include Clemson University, Southern Wesleyan University, Tri-County Technical College, Furman University, Greenville Technical College, Western Carolina University, and Spartanburg Technical College. Economy & Job Market in Pickens County Manufacturing serves as the main source of economic growth in the county with an estimated with more than half of the county’s 12,000-strong workforce producing industrial equipment and in metal works. About 150 manufacturing facilities are located in Pickens, Liberty and Easley. Even though manufacturing serves as the main source of revenue for the county, research and development is quickly gaining momentum in the county with nearby Clemson University playing a major role in the industry’s growth. Furthermore, the university employs over 4,600 staff and faculty. Pickens County Country Club Residents looking to tee off can do so at any of the city’s local courses. One course of note is located at the Pickens County Country Club. Open all year, this semi-private course features a par-72 18-hole course that is known to offer even the most seasoned player a challenge, especially on holes 2 and 16. Other area golf courses include Table Rock Golf Club, Southern Oaks Golf Course, and Rolling Green Golf Club. Parks & Recreation in Pickens If you’re an outdoors enthusiast or would like to check out the natural beauty that Pickens has to offer, then a nice hike or boat ride to two of Pickens’ waterfalls is in order. Twin Falls, also known as Rock Falls, Reedy Cove Falls or Eastatoee Falls, is just that—two waterfalls over a giant slab of granite. The falls are 75 feet tall and can be easily reached by taking an easy 15 minute hike. Laurel Fork Falls is a bit harder to reach by foot; a boat ride is the only way you can witness the truly spectacular and breathtaking beauty of this waterfall. Laurel Fork Falls soars at 80 feet in height. Pickens County also has a few recreational facilities for the use of residents. If you’re looking to camp, fish, or go hiking or boating, Mile Creek Park is an ideal place to go. Table Rock State Park is another terrific place to take your family and friends. This state park was built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps and is one of the state’s most popular parks. Two lakes, mountain cabins, campgrounds and the magnificent mountain backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains are just a few of the many reasons why visitors keep coming back. |
